Mac

As part of FringePVD 2015, I developed an adaptation of Macbeth with fellow Shakespeare enthusiast and frequent collaborator Amy Lee Connell.

Drawing on the intimate stylings of card-sharps such as Ricky Jay and the narrative-driven performance tradition of bizarre magick, the text was reimagined as a brooding close-up magic show, with the obsessed power-couple relentlessly playing through the hands Fate has dealt them before the eyes of a ghostly banquet, hoping perhaps to trick their way out of a destruction which looms inevitably above them.

The piece allowed me to revisit a childhood fascination as a mature artist, and gave me fresh insight into what it means to be a craftsman.

Mac was developed with touring in mind, and can be performed at any indoor table with little more than a piece of felt, a shawl, a crown, and yes–an ordinary deck of playing cards.
